All About Lapband Surgery

March 15, 2011-LapBand Update

It's been a while since I posted about my lapband surgery. I'm down a total of about 70 lbs from my heaviest weight last year. My clothing has dropped about 5 sizes, and my BMI has dropped 12 points. I'm still in the "obese" category, but I'm getting close to getting out of that category, too !! I currently have 3.5 CCs of fill, but I know several other people who have much more filling who have not lost as much weight, so I must be doing something right ! I joined Curves as soon as I was able to start exercising, and I go several times a week....even took a 6 week evening Zumba class there, too, and LOVED it !

I have to admit, sometimes I still struggle with wanting to eat foods that have been labeled as "bad" for me. When I go to a wedding, a baby or bridal shower, or any kind of fun event, I want to feel like a "normal" person and eat a small piece of cake. Luckily, I realize that eating more than just a very small piece (like 2-3 bites) can make me feel nauseated, so I know what my limitations are.

I'm helping my sister throw a baby shower for her son and his fiancee this weekend, and since I have a good friend who owns a  local bakery, I'll be buying the cake. I know that it will be delicious, and I don't want to feel guilty just because I had a taste of it !

I really try to eat mostly proteins, veggies, fruits, and low-fat dairy products. Not only does that help with my weight loss, but I think it has been very beneficial to my ulcerative colitis, too. If I stay away from breads and pastas, I really do feel better....plus eating bread feels like I'm trying to stuff a rock through a tiny hole inside my chest....not comfortable !!

Since I had my lapband surgery in August 2010, I've also had my gallbladder removed, and I'm currently off of work on disability following a complete hysterectomy 11 days ago. I'm truly hoping that the hormone thing doesn't start causing me to gain weight as I've been warned by some that it will.

Anyway, I wonder if anyone else out there still feels like they're struggling with food issues. If so, let me know and please offer any advise you can !

I go for my first "fill" on Tuesday. So far, I'm maintaining the weight loss I've enjoyed so far, prior to getting my band filled. I'm hoping that I will start to see more dramatic results after this. The fill coupled with the fact that I've joined Curves should do the trick ! More to come !

I had lapband surgery about two weeks ago, and it has been quite the adventure. Before my surgery, I heard people say this was the easiest thing ever, no big whoop, could have gone back to work the next day, blah blah blah. What I forgot is that the people who were telling me this were 20 years younger than I am....... BIG difference !

So far, I'm doing pretty well, I think. Since my initial visit to the doctor in preparation for the surgery, I've lost about 23 pounds. I can feel a difference in my clothing, which is good. I'm just now allowed to begin on soft foods: cottage cheese, pureed veggies, etc. I'm trying to become creative in how I approach this, because I do still feel hunger once in a great while... even though it doesn't take much to fill me up !!

I'm going to add a photo here as my "before" photo. This was taken three days after my initial doctor's visit, so I'd say it's as close to a "before" photo as I can get. I'm in the middle; my daughter is on the right and her fiancé is on the left. This was taken at their engagement party.

I will post pictures periodically as I progress along the way !
